| Dear friends at PzG Inc., The rise of racial/ethnic pride in the USA in recent years has given me an increasing desire to herald my Germanic pride. Hermann and Gottleib came to this continent from Prussia about 1848. Hermann served with the Union army in the American Civil War and later became (according to his obituary) "an industrious German farmer". My Uncle Merlin (a reluctant hero) served in the U S Army during WWII in the European Theatre. Although assigned to a machine-gun crew just after the Battle of the Bulge, firing the gun was the last thing he wanted to do. He told me "I didn't want to be shooting an uncle or a cousin" and is an example of many American GIs who did not want to fire weapons at their European brethren. During the three years I spent in the U S Army during the early 1970s, two of them were at Nurnberg, Germany (Nuremburg). While a very conservative city (the wild and crazy 70s were somewhere else, darn it!) it was certainly filled with history. One of the barracks buildings I lived in (WWI era) still had swastikas over the entry doors. I have stood on the spot where the Leader reviewed the parade of the 1934 (and other) party rally and the review stand in Soldiers Field (these sites are well documented in Leni Riefenstahl's Triumph of the Will ) where many rallies were held. Enough of my deja vu, I have just ordered the 1937 map of Germany to show my family what Germany was before dismemberment after WWII (and particularly East Prussia). I am particularly interested in books you offer concerning what happened to Germany during and after WWII and hope that you can get more of these translated into English in the future. I find that when I can give someone something that they can read, they realize what a raw deal the Fatherland received after WWI and why a conflict (WWII) occurred as it did with the cast of protagonists so involved. An interesting thing happened to me in Ukraine last year. I was on a hunting trip there and the outfitter and cook were Russians. He (the outfitter) had served in the Soviet army in the early 1980s. She (the cook) was a real sweet (well you know) young, recently divorced Ruskie. He is also interested in history and since he speaks excellent English (German too) we struck up quite a conversation on the train from Crimea to Kiev. Having spoken with some Great Patriotic War veterans a common issue came up. It was obvious that the Ruskies were soon to head west by the railroad rails and ties that were stacked up near the border (some folks may not be aware of the different gauges of railroad track used in Europe in those far-off days) at the time of Operation Barbarossa. Well we wouldn't hear of such things in the post WWII revisionist media barrage would we? This was just one of many things my brother (Sovietski) army veteran and myself shared. It was really a wonderful experience talking to someone who, as a member of our group asked, what would we have done if the USSR and USA had gone to war? My reply "We each would have done our best to kill the other, that is the job." It is not always easy to associate with the (past) 'enemy'. Just as one of my Russian friends (I think) asked, knowing of my German heritage, "Which side did your uncle fight on"? And later, what I thought of the situation where Russia and Poland now occupies previous East Prussia. The simple fact (while swallowing hard) is that I did not invade and kill Russians and they did not invade and kill Germans. Thanks and good bye. BC |
