Living History...
stories from you our friends and customers.
I have a few comments I doubt that they are site worthy but are sad, wild and interesting; to me at least.
I was told a story by my female lavian cousin from my mother side that during WW2 all my female relatives were in a displaced persons camp in German occupied zone in Latvia and when under german care they were treated like ladys, romanced and treated to the finest of cosmetics, clothes, perfumes, stockings, foods and treats but when the americans came they were treated like animals, gang raped, abused, beaten and belittled. then when released by the americans to the Russians they were forced to walk to Siberia and further abused by the Russians in a simular mannor as the Americans treated them.
As I got older(mid 20's) I was told that my latvian family fought with the Germans against the Russians in WW2. Now in my mid 30's I finally understand what they were really saying as my father explained this to me right before he passed away recently.
In my youth I was told little negative about the germans besides the cruel conduct of some improperly unmonitored Germans toward some jewish peoples during the war and also about the cruel American conduct in WW2 toward POWS and German women and children. My family taught me to be a loyal American (voter and tax payer), serve in the military (proudly served, U.S. army) and be loyal to the constitution (I vote with this in mind) and think for your self and learn from history and remember the winners write the history books.
What I found very shocking was being told by my father right before his passing away that his father was a German SS officer in WW2. He said it did not supprise him that since I was very young I had a historical interest but not a political interest in the Nazis. I was never told till now the full details that both sides were part of the whole German/Nazi thing.
It's amazing that families handle things in this mannor as a second generation American I was facinated by this.
Thank You
P.S. I do not tell many about my family history as I know that it may upset some people but it feels good to know there are people that feel pride in the history of their peoples and can take the positive out of it and not the negative. Many people have deep rooted pride as I do and some feel they can not express it. This is refreshing to see it expressed in a positive light on your site and thank you for posting this. I like your site and your personal touches to it.
