- CHRISTMAS BASKETS -
My mother still remembers what it was like before National Socialism came to power....her family was poor, without work, and doing without the basics.
As a young girl, she remembers how her standard of living went way up when "Uncle" Adolf (the young folks would affectionately call him Uncle) became Reichskanzler and her father and family were now back at work making a living and eating good again. When my mom's father finally starting his coffee business before it was bombed and he joined the Luftwaffe, he was honored one Christmas year by being commissioned by Reichs Chancellory to put together "Christmas Baskets" for the senior officials of the SS Leibstandare guarding the Chancellory. The baskets consisted of coffee, of course, along with fruits, nuts, and various other German goodies.
My mother remembers that in return, Adolf Hitler sent her family a personal note of thanks and a huge basket of everything imaginable to eat and drink including a huge goose! That was a proud moment for her and her family. That honor and huge basket she still remembers vividly today.
