1944 Wound Badge
"Add excitment to your military history collection!"
(shown larger than actual size)
The Wound Badge of July 20, 1944 was awarded to those who were wounded in the failed plot to assassinate Adolph Hitler and overturn the Nazi regime. Including Hitler, there were 25 people in the Wolf’s Lair conference room in Rastenburg, East Prussia, when the bomb set by Col. Claus von Stauffenberg exploded. One officer was killed immediately, and three others died of their wounds later. Six other men were wounded. Hitler suffered damage to his ear drums. To commemorate the event, Hitler ordered the creation of a special wound badge in three grades. The version in black went to men who had not already received the standard wound badge. The badge in black was awarded to six men, including generals Wilhelm Keitel and Alfred Jodl. The first awards were made Aug. 20, 1944, just a month after the assassination attempt. The badge uses the standard wound badge design of a helmet with a swastika superimposed on crossed swords, inside a laurel wreath. In the field below the helmet is the date “20 Juli 1944” and Hitler’s signature, both highlighted. The reverse is fitted with a simple pin-back. Our high-quality reproduction measures slightly less than two inches tall.

Army Wound Badge
"Add excitment to your military history collection!"
(shown larger than actual size)
The German wound badge dates back to World War I. Kaiser Wilhelm II established the first German Military Wound badge (Verwundetenzbzeichen) on March 3rd, 1918, with a declaration stating that it would be presented in 3 grades. It was to awarded in black for one to two wounds, in silver for three to four wounds, and in gold for five wounds or more. In cases of severe wounds the higher class was presented. The Imperial Wound badge was to provide the basis for ones issued during World War II. It was an oval badge with laurels surrounding the edges and a ribbon at the base. In the center of the badge is an Imperial helmet, with a pair of swords behind it. The background of the center is pebbled, though in one variation the background of the badge is hollowed.
