History of the Iron Cross / Knight's Cross:  Reconstituted in 1939 by Adolf Hitler, the Iron Cross grading was changed and he removed the Imperial Crown and the "W" from the obverse and all of the reverse except the 1813 institution date.  The additional grade added was the Knight's Cross and suspension devices were added between 1940 and 1944 to denote higher grades.  The ribbon was changed to include a broad red center stripe. The men who proudly wore the Knight's Cross had distinguished themselves in battle. The Ritterkreuzträgers became the heroes of an adoring Nazi Germany. In fact, to this day the Ritterkreuzträgers are still held in high esteem in their own communities.

1939 Grand Cross of the Iron Cross

1939 Grand Cross of the Iron Cross - the highest grade in the Iron Cross series. Intended as an award for only the top military leadership, the 1813, 1870 and 1914 versions of the Grand Cross were awarded sparingly. The 1939 version was even more exclusive, with Luftwaffe commander Hermann Goering being the sole recipient. He received the award on July 19, 1940, in recognition of the Luftwaffe’s successes in France, Belgium and the Netherlands earlier that year. The Grand Cross is essentially an oversized Knight’s Cross, and was worn suspended from a neck ribbon. Goering was known to wear his Grand Cross, Knight’s Cross and Pour le' Merite around his neck simultaneously. The reverse bears the 1813 institution date for the Iron Cross. Our high-quality reproduction is nickel-plated, with a blackened center, and measures about two-and-a-half inches wide. It comes with a 10-inch length of neck ribbon.

Third Reich Medal / Decoration

Iron Cross First Class - one of the world’s most recognizable military decorations. With its origins as a Prussian award during the Napoleonic Wars, the medal was revived during the Franco-Prussian War in 1870, and at the start of World War I in 1914. The 1939 version of the award was authorized for World War II. The cross features the swastika in the center, and the 1939 institution date on the lower limb. About 300,000 of the medals were awarded during the war. The medal was worn on the lower left breast pocket. Our high-quality nickel reproduction is fitted with a simple pin-back.

Hans-Ulrich Rudel (July 2, 1916 – December 18, 1982) was a Stuka dive-bomber pilot during World War II. Rudel is famous for being the most highly decorated German serviceman of the war. Hans-Ulrich Rudel was the only person to be awarded the Knight's Cross with Golden Oak Leaves, Swords, and Diamonds. Rudel flew 2,530 combat missions and successfully attacked many tanks, trains, ships, and other ground targets, claiming a total of 2,000 targets destroyed - including 800 vehicles, 519 tanks, 150 artillery guns, a destroyer, two cruisers, one Soviet battleship and nine aircraft which he shot down.
