Deutsches Afrikakorps (DAK)

The Afrika Korps formed upon Adolf Hitler's personal orders on 11 January 1941 and Erwin Rommel was designated as commander on 11 February. The reputation of the Afrika Korps is closely associated with that of its original commander, Generalfeldmarschall Erwin Rommel popularly known as the Desert Fox who was regarded as one of the most skilled commanders of desert warfare.

GR233 Italian/German Campaign Medal in Africa - FRONT & BACK OF MEDAL - History of the Italian/German Campaign Medal in Africa - The Italian/German Campaign Medal in Africa was awarded by the Italian government to German soldiers who participated in the North African campaigns. The medal was not awarded to Italians. The medal was first awarded in early 1942, and was authorized for wear by German troops. After Italy’s withdrawal from the war in 1944, this authorization was rescinded. The obverse design depicts two gladiators, representing Italy and Germany, wrestling with a crocodile, representing the British, and prying its jaws open. The reverse shows the Italian Feleni Arch, flanked by the Italian fasces and the German swastika, all surrounded by an inscription. The green, white, red and black ribbon, a combination of the two countries’ national colors, further signified Italian-German cooperation.
