This meticulous recreation of U-234 final voyage sheds new light onto one of World War Two's enduring mysteries. Departing Germany during the war's last weeks, U-234's mission was to deliver cutting-edge German military technology to Japan; its payload included about 1,200 pounds of uranium oxide - a key ingredient in Japan's own atomic weapons program. After Germany's defeat, the ship's crew surrendered, and American experts were soon poring over its exotic cargo. The uranium oxide however quickly vanished. One of this film's key revelations concerns its ultimate destination: into America's Manhattan Project, as a major source of the weapons-grade uranium that went into the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. With its probing interviews with U-234 crew members, Manhattan Project figures and others, this film provides powerful answers to one of the war's most intriguing chapters.
