Michael Wittman and the Tiger Commanders of the Leibstandarte by Patrick Agte
For years we have imported Michael Whitmann und dir Tiger from Germany. Now we have acquired a few copies of this beautiful coffee table size English edition.
Printed on glossy paper the digitally restored photos are better than ever. Includes 700 photographs, 34 maps and 4 orders of battle. This book is both a military biography of the famous tank ace - the most successful tank commander of World War II - and the complete history of the Tiger company of the 1. SS Panzer Division "Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler". The Tiger company later became the schwere SS Panzer Abteilung 101/501, participating in the savage fighting at Kharkov and Kursk in 1943; Russia, Normandy and Belgium (the Ardennes Offensive) in 1944; Hungary - the Gran Bridge head and the attempted relief of the siege of Budapest - and Austria in 1945.
The author has produced a meticulously researched, extremely well illustrated history, which includes numerous personal accounts of the fighting.

"BUT I KNEW THAT IT ABSOLUTELY HAD TO BE"
13 JUNE 1944 - THE BATTLE OF VILLER-BOCAGE
The same day Michael Wittmann described his experiences on that Tuesday morning: "I was in my command post and had given no thought to the idea that the enemy might appear suddely. I had sent one of my officers to establish contact with a unit deployed up front and was waithin for him to return with fresh reports. Then a man suddenly came into my command post and declared, 'Obersturmfuehrer, tanks are driving past outside. They're a peculiar round shape and I don't think they're German' I immediately went outside and saw tanks rolling past about 150 to 200 meters distant. They were English and American types. At the same time I saw that the tanks were accompanied by armored troop carriers."
"It was an entire armored regiment. This armored regiment had taken me by surprise."
That was Wittmann's dispassionate diagnosis of the extremely precarious situation in which he now found himself. It is impossible to say what went on inside him in that period of only a few seconds. what choices did he have? He could stay in cover, report his sighting by radio and request reinforcements. But then Wittmann wouldn't have been Wittmann. Quick action was called for, as he was obciously faced with an enemy breakthrough with dire consequences. He decided to attack, alone, one panzer against an English armored brigade!
"Yes, I must say that the decision was a very, very difficult one. Never before had I been so impressed by the strength of the enemy as I was by those tanks rolling by; but I knew that is absolutely had to be and I decided to strike out into the enemy."
Wittmann knew that this powerful armored formation would meet no German forces of note on the road leading to Caen. He must avert a catastrophe, the collapse of the front. There was no other choice for mim, the born lone figthter, he had to throw himself against the enemy tanks and try to make the impossible possible. - page 319
