What were the origins of the Bund?

They were a mixture of many things, to include the post-WWI abortive Communist Revolution in Germany and response by the Freikorps movement, the early Hitler activities of 1922-1924, the world-wide economic boycott of German products starting in 1933, anti-German propaganda in the USA during the 1930s tied with fresh memories of US involvement in the Great War, and of course the Great Depression. They too were Americans is an inside view of the German-American Bund from interviews, personal diaries, hundreds of photos and artifacts compiled by the author. The Bund was a truly independent form of American National Socialism which sought understanding as well as friendship between the United States and Germany. Domestically, the Bund believed portions of the Capitalist as well as National Socialist world view could be of benefit to their fellow citizens in America.

I have you had a chance to glance through the book They too were Americans? It is wonderfully illustrated with period photographs. I was particularly interested in the German- American bund regalia, such as armbands, trumpet banners flags, etc. Also, the text is lucid and remarkable for it's objectiveness. I was really impressed on how beautiful the printing and typography is. As a librarian, I appreciate books as works of art as well as objects of information and entertainment. I think one can be interested in National Socialism and collecting it's regalia, without necessarily BEING a National Socialist. (I fall into that category). A letter-perfect facsimile reprint of the very rare 32-page booklet produced by the Nazi Party’s Ortsgruppe (regional organization) in Brooklyn, New York, USA, to commemmorate its first year as a sanctioned Ortsgruppe of the Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiter Partei (NSDAP or National Socialist German Worker Party). In German and American languages, the booklet presents rare full-page photos of members of each uniformed detachment, the Ortsgruppe office on Knickerbocker Avenue, the Deutschtum Erwache concert that attracted 2000 people and the Ortsgruppe protest of the New York City-wide boycott of German made goods. More than thirty Ortsgruppe members advertised their businesses in this yearbook.
