REICHSARBEITDIENST (RAD) or
(The Reich Labor Service)
The duties and purpose of the RAD were physical training and education through work, drill, sports, a regulated way of living and a bond with the (German) soil, a community-spirit, in short, the sacrifice of the individual to the service of the Fuhrer and of the German Nation. Another important aspect was indoctrination in national-socialism, corporate spirit and fraternal equality. All Germans between the age of 18 and 25 had to serve in the RAD. For men it became a preparation for service in the army.
Hitler's interest in a German Labour Service (RAD) went beyond alleviating unemployment or building political support. He saw manual labor as an important way to break down social and class barriers and mold the character of young people. He also wanted to revive interest in the dignity of manual labour. "Labor service," Hitler claimed "shall be the proud privilege of German Youth and shall be service to the entire Volk."
WOMEN IN THE THIRD REICH
Women played a vital role in Adolf Hitler's plan to create an ideal German Community (Volksgemeinschaft). Hitler believed a larger, racially purer population would enhance Germany's military strength and provide settlers to colonize conquered territory in eastern Europe. The Third Reich's aggressive population policy encouraged "racially pure" women to bear as many "Aryan" children as possible. Girls were taught to embrace the role of mother and obedient wife in school and through compulsory membership in RAD Reich Labor Services.

Triumph and Tragedy by Florentine S. Rost Van Tonninge
Personal Remembrances of Dutch and European
History in the 20th Century
Imported from Europe
Very few people in the world today have stood as close to so many key events and leading personalities of the 20th century as has the author of these memoirs. As the wife of the former high commissioner for the League of Nations in Vienna and president of the Bank of the Netherlands, she met them all - heads of State, princes of the Church, scientists and artists, heroes and scoundrels, those who fought for a New Order and those who opposed it - from Prince Bernhard, Princess Juliana, Engelbert Dollfuss, Pope Pius XII, Konrad Lorenz, Willem Mengelberg, Winifred Wagner and Orro Skorzeny, to Anto Mussert, Joseph Goebbels, Rudolf Hess and Heinrich Himmler, no to mention the leading figure of the age, Adolf Hitler. This is the personal story of a most remarkable woman who through both triumph and tragedy has remained ever staunch and steadfast in her convictions as well as in her unswerving commitment to the truth. A wonderful read.
The preceding quote is from a Third Reich birth certificate received by Mrs. Rost Van Tonningen at the birth of her child.
Happy Birthday!
