Right after landing on Crete's soil, a fight for life and death ensued. Some of the paratroopers landed right in front of the rifle and machine-gun barrels of the enemy. Some got caught in the branches of the olive trees. One man crashed through the roof of a passenger bus. Another man got caught up in the lines between telephone poles. The first dramatic episodes of fighting took place among grape vines, agave plants, and olive trees. There were crashes and booms in every direction.
Well-aimed fire was coming down on the drop zone from New Zealand forces occupying the high ground. Armed only with pistols and hand grenades, my paratroopers worked their way up the slopes. After some difficult close-in fighting, I worked my way across the battlefield in leaps and bounds...Without being noticed, my adjutant had also climbed the hill at the same time, off to the right. He silenced a machine gun with hand grenades.
The sun burned down mercilessly on the paratroopers, who had dug their way into the earth. Although the hill had been taken, the fate of my other companies was still unknown...
