Germany's largest city, Berlin is also the country's capital and one of its sixteen states.  It is the second most populous city in Europe with a population of 3.4 million and is location in the north east of the country at the center of the Berlin-Brandenburg metropolitan area.  The city is built on marshy ground which was shaped by the last Ice Age's melting ice sheets and is, today, a major center for politics, culture, science and media.  Berlin also serves as a hub for air and rail transport and, as a result, can boast its position as the third most visited city in Europe.

The city was first documented in the thirteenth century under the Kingdom of Prussia.  It would then establish itself as the capital of the German Empire, the Weimar Republic and the Third Reich before dividing into East and West following defeat in the Second World War.  The two sides of the city were separated by the infamous Berlin Wall in 1961 which was pulled down in 1989.  A year later, and the Germany underwent reunification giving the city the chance to unite a country and once again claim its title of capital.

At the heart of Berlin lies the River Spree which sprawls 400 kilometers from the Lusation Hills on the Czech border to the western side of the city where it joins the River Havel.  Large quarters of the city extend onto the plateaus either side of the Spree Valley.  The metropolis, today, is home to a number of museums, while its historical legacy lives on the urban landscapes that envelop its rich architecture.

About the Authors:
Dieter and Anke Adler have been fascinated by Germany's capital city since they first went there at the height of the Cold War.  They watched with joy along with all Germans when the wall came down, but remember with sadness the deaths that it had caused.  Today they live just outside Bielefeld with their son and bicycles.

An Account of the French 33rd Charlemagne Division

The 33rd SS was made up of volunteers from France to fight against Bolshevism.  They fought to the last man defending the Fuehrer Bunker.
