Peiper reacted immediately. "All guns fire forward; fire, fire, fire, fire!" The tank cannon boomed and simultaneously a yellow flame burst from the muzzle of the Russian gun. The flame filled Peiper's vision from horizon to horizon and from its height to its depth. His Panzer rocked as the high velocity shell, striking the turret a glancing blow, ricocheted and produced a coruscation of sparks that flickered in the sun. The SS officer saw to his right fron a deep pit excavated in the snow - a command post. He looked with blank eyes at the Russian soldiers scrabbling in the trampled snow at the bottom of the pit. Them or me - the Eastern Front's deadly alternative. The reds floundering in the snow looked up at the German commander, their eyes pleading to be allowed to live...

Lucas takes the bare bones of a real operation by a Kampfgruppe commanded by Jochen Peiper in February 1943 in which he assisted in bringing the 320th Infantry Division out of a possible encirclement. Lucas used the divisional diaries and other sources to come up with a bare bones factual account of the operation, but then presents it as a story using the real life characters involved. He thereby brings a potentially boring military book to life and brings home the horrors, fears and elations of the front line soldiers of both sides.
