Elite Panzer Strike Force: Germany's Panzer Lehr Division in World War II
by Franz Kurowski
From Normandy to Ardennes
Book Description
All of the tank destroyers were firing. Schonrath ordered us to head for the middle of the village, where we set up a defensive perimeter around the marketplace.
An enemy tank destroyer pushed its way into the marketplace from a side street. It was soon joined by another four. Duckert's and Schonrath's vehicles fired at about the same time we did. Three flames lanced out into the darkness. Three hammer blows indicated that all of us had hit steel. Two sheets of flame rose skyward from two of the tank destroyers. The third one rolled a bit forward, and I took up another sight picture. My rouynd hit it between the turret and the hull and ripped off the turret like a matchstick. The crew tried to dismount, but as it was doing so, the ready racks on the vehicle started exploding, soon taking the entire vehicle with it. The remaining enemy vehicles hurriedly withdrew.
A few German grenadiers arrived. Everything seemed somewhat surreal in the darkness and the flickering light from the flames of the burning tank destroyers.
– Unteroffizier Eduard Job, a tank destroyer gunner in the Panzer Lehr Division, describes an engagement near the end of the war.
Story of one of the best and most battered armored divisions in the German armed forces.

Includes numerous firsthand accounts based on interviews with veterans.
